Regional
Portola is located on State Route 70 approximately
10 miles east of the intersection with State Route 89 that connects to
I-80 at Truckee, approximately 35 miles
to the south.
State Route 70 is an all-weather
highway, the lowest elevation highway across the Sierra.
Downtown Reno
and the Reno/Tahoe Airport are located approximately 45 minutes from
the site via State Route 70 and US Highway 395.
City of Portola
The project site is within the municipal boundaries
of the City of Portola and extends from the currently developed portion
of the City to the southern boundary on
the flank of Beckwourth Peak.
Existing neighborhoods and the
Portola High School abut the project to the north.
Portola is the only incorporated City in Plumas
County. With a well-established commercial core area, Portola is the
economic and service hub for eastern
Plumas County. Nearby communities include Graeagle, Whitehawk Ranch, Gold
Mountain and Grizzly Ranch. Portola's commercial core includes banks, real
estate offices, shopping, restaurants and services. The population
is currently 2,500 residents within the City. Portola's population and
that of nearby communities total approximately 10,000.
History
Portola was originally developed as a service
center for the Western Pacific Railroad, and the Feather River route
rail line is operated by Union Pacific
RR today. The early rail, mining and timber-based economy has given way
to a more diverse economy based on tourism, vacation and retirement home
development, and local service businesses. With an easy commute of only
45 minutes to downtown Reno, Portola is also emerging as an attractive
residential area for the Reno work force.
Community Character
Portola is a compact community located along the
Middle Fork of the Feather River, a Wild and Scenic River. A City park
and bike trail extending more
than one-half mile along the river provides direct access for fishing
and recreation.
Spectacular mountains, including Beckwourth Peak
to the south, provide a beautiful alpine setting for the City.
The older
commercial buildings and neighborhoods reflect the community’s
beginnings as a mountain railroad town. |
Environmental
Setting
Woodbridge is located within the northern end of the Sierra Nevada
Mountain Range. The property is located at the base of the northern
flank of Beckwourth Peak and the south side of the Humbug Valley.
Beckwourth Peak is a remnant ancient volcano dating back 10-20
million years ago. The Middle Fork Feather River, designated as
a Wild and Scenic River, flows through the center of the Humbug
Valley and the City.

The entire project lies within the
upper Middle Fork Feather River drainage, with Wildcat Creek
draining down Beckwourth Peak into the river below.
The elevation ranges from approximately
5,345’ near the southeastern corner to approximately 4,890’ at
Wildcat Creek in the northeastern portion.
The forested portion of the property
is dominated by Jeffrey Pine and Ponderosa Pine, with Black Oak
trees interspersed through the forest. |
